yes, you are correct, there are no "money" shots (underside), but there are 3 obligatory rear seat shots. LOL

i don't mind if the seller gets what he's asking - i just hope that any potential buyer really knows what he is getting

"what makes it more special is it is 1 of 500 Automatics made, 90% of these vehicles were made with a 5 speed transmission"

Wow, I guess you can learn something new every day! Coulda sworn there were 1667 total of which 526 were automatics. Gotta find one of the 90% that were 5 speeds.

I looked at those pictures and maybe it's just me but that thing is screaming "rust bucket". The lower edge of the doors and fenders look like somebody applied cake batter and painted over it. Also the pictures look like they have been altered with some care to prevent detailed assessment of the car's actual condition. And yes, the flowery text and obligatory photos of the back seat don't help. An uneducated buyer might be overcome by wishful thinking and hit the "buy it now" button however.

Whether it's car sales or the NFL, there is a sucker born every minute and crafty or deceptive sellers know they just have to hook one to get their price. In vintage cars I think the condition of the individual vehicle is more important than the "market price" because condition varies so widely, with "Blue Max" at one end of the scale and this Ebay car on the other.

I sent him a message via Ebay asking what warranted the sudden jump in the asking price. Maybe he put some good money into in in the last 5 days and we are just being hard on the guy. ;)

My favorite quote of his listing:

OVERALL MY BMW IS AMAZING AND I HATE TO GET RID OF IT.

Why would anyone hit "buy it now" instead of placing a bid below?
Only if you think this is the last beer before the Sahara desert...

Who was the first owner? Does the ABC News story add a twist?

Agree with DP that nothing helps, the board's instinct is to protect the buyers as though we were a branch of the Better Business Bureau. A lofty board of brother's keepers...

Drum Roll PLease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kind of reminds me of a certain someone that has been quiet in this forum lately that buys anything and everything he can get his hands on. Lol.

Here is his response from a message I sent him from Ebay.

Dear verde2002,

Thnks for your interest, i think any buyer will inspect that i deal with! Thaks again, i dont have 100% feedback for making bad deals! I am in the coupe community by the way, i have three 3.0 and a few 2800's
i restore them and this is a perfect restoration car!

i was going to buy it from the original owner, he has passed away and the car was turned in to the dealership, i purchased it from the dealer because i knew more about the car than he did, you are right and this is what im selling it for, your more than welcome to inspect it, i collect classic cars and he didnt know what he had! Thanks again!

verde 2002,

i don't think its the person you think it is. don't think he would be caught dead with a 1990 ls 400 ... much less karmann ghias. besides the person you are thinking of only has 1 2800cs + 4 - 3.0cs

I'm surprised no ones knows this person from our forum being he owns multiple coupes.

The plot thickens. Time to engage Chief Inspector Clouseau from the Surete.

Looks like there is more than one person behind the post, maybe an employee, an assistant, a wife. Somebody from the board would not say most of these were built as 5 speeds, nor position automatic as a plus. We don't call them 3.0 either, either E9 or 3.0CS.

Some of the writing sounds like a literal translation into English, or the repetition of a formula, like WE ARE SELLING OUR CAR AS IS NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
Does that mean that the buyer cannot ask questions or the seller will take the cash and not ask where it came from?
Use of the term WE instead of I is a detail experts have been arguing over in the book of Genesis for example, I would not overlook that.

Or " i dont have 100% feedback for making bad deals!", where the double negative suggests the rethorical sales style used in person more than ebay, and most of the ebay feedback was as a buyer not a seller. Go to the mall and see lots of great buyers that never sold a pencil.

A cryptical angle the Surete ponders is "It Idols like a sewing machine", if you search "motor idles like a sewing machine" you will find ticking valve problems not smooth operation...

Good luck to seller and buyer! I hope the car is restored to its glory and maybe one day it will make the show "American Idle".

The seller appears to be a guy named Mike, not Jeff.

this is not Jeff (execmalibu) - he's not happytimes310 alias on ebay, think about it, he would not have made the errors on statistics. so if Scott (craterface) is right, who knows a guy named Mike in our community in the LA area that has several coupes?

I think he was less than honest when he claimed to own multiple coupes. I asked him if he was involved in any of the coupe or BMW forums and also told him to register his coupes and his response was "Thanks!". He completely ignored my question about his involvement with the coupe community. I think he claimed to own multiple coupes to have some legitimacy in his mind. Maybe I am wrong but this is just my opinion.

Anyone that spends 10k + on a coupe without a PPI is gonna get his ass kicked when his wife finds out he wasted that much money on a pig with lipstick.

Looks like it sold for $8K, at least until the buyer looks at it and it returns to eBay shortly thereafter...

A jpig with lipstick online, - and then you meet her in the flesh and she's got a rusty butt.

wow why so low value?

Are we the only ones in the world who 'gets it' for the e9?

Ever since I saw one in 1986 I don't understand why they don't go for more?!?

In general, what do all of you think re; staying as close to 100% ORIGINAL versus performance upgrades? I'm at a fork in the road and as the Germans would say, I lust after the HP stuff!! Any advice?? BTW, mine's Euro CS 2213336 with original Zeniths which perform perfectly etc... I just want more than 180 (DIN) horse power.

Heck, I'm thinking of getting a 3.5l from a 6 series, schrick (290 or what are your thoughts up to 310's out of Germany)?

Love this site and looking forward!!! Thanks, Tom

Probably the reason the car might only attract a low price is the hobbyist market knows there are some E9's of dubious structural integrity that attempt to bring in real money. The cost to properly repair the hidden structural areas of a rusted car are quite expensive and are best left to a Marque specialist. Trim is also quite expensive if you need to replace a lot of it.

Tom,
We all have ruminated on this topic and not arrived at a reason that holds up to scrutiny. Our coupes are beautify, rare, comfortable, great to drive - so why not?
As far as lust for speed, go your own way. There are several coupes on the board here that are set up with M5 engines, hot cams, headers and all kinds of go-fast stuff. In varying degreees. I have a 3.5 in my coupe that has a few changes but most are not visible to the naked eye. Search Juicy Lucy belonging to RB1971, one hotrod CS!!
LAST - Take a moment and register your coupe at our sister website www.e9-driven.com
If you know of any other coupes or parts cars, add them too. One more coupe and we hit 1800 registered!

Values have gone up ... Just not as much as you want

I think values have gone up considerably. Five years ago a clean CSL could be had for $50-60k, and a nice Csi for $30k. In the last 2-3 years I've seen few coupes sell in the $40k-70k range. That's pretty good for a GT car of the period. Ferrari 308's and 328's sell for no more, and the four seaters are dirt cheap. One of my favorite p-cars is the 944turbo, and those are only in the teens. 1975-80 911's can be found all day for below $20k. The Merc SL's of the period are worth far less than an E9 in comparable condition.

Let's be honest, E9's are fairly appreciated and valued for what they are. They are simply a mass produced GT car that is not the
-) fastest ( Pantera, P-turbo, 911s, etc)
-) rarest
-) prettiest (compare it to a 70's Dino, Miura, 512BB)
-) winning-est ( eg not a p-car). They aren't eligible for most vintage racing, CSL's excepted.
-) snottiest (AM)

I even think E30 M3 sport evo's will eventually surpass E9 values because of their importance in racing. In a year we'll be able to import the Sport Evo from the uk and Europe. The e30 has much more historic significance for BMW ... And like the E9 it also seats four for Sunday brunch.

My advice, stop worrying about it and enjoy these wonderfully practical classics.
If investment value is your priority, I'd buy a couple early 230/250 Merc Pagodas or an M3 Sport Evo and stick them in the barn.

Sincerely, and sadly sans E9' at the moment...

John
