OK, had a visit from an old enemy, Arthur Itis... and it looks like he wants to stay a while.
I am relearning how to work with fewer functional digits. Plan remains the same, schedule has changed, that's all.

Thanks for your patience.

Drew ... the completely improved lights makes a HUGE difference - instead of one brake bulb, Andy swaps out the socket and reworks it to give you 2 brake bulbs ... with also double taillights ... and much brighter bulbs. if you then combine that with a 3rd brakelight (like many of us have) ... its like a modern car. unfortunately Andrew Wilson no longer has access to the parts to make the 3rd brakelight that most of us use ... he can tell you how to make them.

Scott--thanks for the reply. I will make the conversion when my other projects are complete. Stan sent me Andrew's 3rd brake light assembly instructions. I found the neon red tubing hard to find. But that light is a must in urban traffic.---Drew

Guess you didn’t see Andy’s post on 27 July.

Dear Andy, I hope the arthritis isn't playing up too much presently. We have been in contact in the past and I have had some work done on my lights but the reflectors are not very good. Are you able to swap out with better ones? Thanks, Mark (markevans44 at btinternet dot com)

Mark- Be glad to help, I have a box full of reflectors in various condition. I will shoot you an email and we can see what will work.
Don't think I've ever seen a brake reflector melt like that ... did you have a brake light switch fail 'closed?'

UPDATE-- UPDATE -- UPDATE

I finally dug into the pile of old reflectors. I have selected the worst and an average one to see what processes and materials would work the best. As of this week, I have the pleasure of reporting that I am encouraged by a MYLAR sheet material that is very shiny, self-stick, and hopefully durable enough to stand up to normal use.

Tests were performed using standard conditions-- no lens and a fixed camera exposure.
I used a battery charger on the same setting, and the same lamp, for all three, shining onto a flat white wall about 18 inches away.
Three tail light reflectors were chosen in the following condition for the comparison:

1) an old reflector in rough shape (no shine at all, badly corroded),
2) an old reflector in fairly good shape (sort of shiny, no corrosion), and
3) one with the new material lining the reflector dish.

RESULTS ARE PROMISING!

The first two images are very dark.
This first one is the old corroded reflector with a new HO lamp

This is the fairly good reflector, cleaned to remove dirt.

This is the re-coated reflector with the shiny new Mylar.

I will now be running accelerated life testing on the prototype to see if normal heating over several hours in a fully assembled light will cause issues.

Keep your fingers crossed!

Andy

Thank you, Scott. Will do.

Coincidentally, I just got an email from a local - his friend has an E9 coupe, and referred me for lighting work.
NOT for a coupe, though -- for a 1971 911 Porsche! I see from your sig there's one in your garage. (We should talk)

yes Andy, but its a 2011 version ... 40 year newer technology + plenty of light comes out of the back end. in that car, the words of Franco in the Gumball Rally movie ring true - "The first rule of Italian driving ... what's behind you is NOT important". in the coupe, its a different story

Whoops! I guess I missed that part... I apparently mixed the two lines, and saw 1971 ... Porsche 911.
I will clean my glasses now.

Not to detract you at all, but having had a few early 911s, there are quite a few lighting "specialists" in that world. Quite a few choices to pick from from led bulbs to full blown, retrofitted led panels that fit in the original housings.

Just thought I'd mention it. Not to deter, just inform.

Not offended at all! I'm going to be kept pretty busy restoring the E3 to E32 lights I have been working on. If you point me to any of the P-car vintage 911 upgrades, I will be glad to have a look- maybe even get ideas I can use.
