The bar

This was the rough install of the bar in case someone missed this. (finish to follow) Carbs? No idea, yet the bar sits quite snug towards the firewall, with clearance a plenty. I cannot imagine why it would not work with the carbs / air cleaners. Do not know...

So I guess no strut bar for stock air cleaner with 38/38 Weber carbs?

Hi Chuck !

As you can see, Allen has installed the cross-tube allready.
To avoid some miscommunication from my side
(as i am no native english speaker ;-) ) email him or pm him and ask for the measurements.
He is a very competent and helpfull engineer, an approach will surely lead to results !

The tubes are allready welded, I got them back this afternoon from the shop !
Sorry to all of you for the delay, my welder was absent for at least 5 weeks !

Before i do the shipping, there is also a possibility to make an engraving!

Here you can see the 3,0csi-logo I did for my own strut-bar.
I can engrave what you want, as long i have a pattern, tell me your wishes via PM !

Costs for engraving : +50€ !

BTW: Strutbar price is 300€ + shipping, to GB it is 30€, to Germany 17€ !

That white car must be a very early 2800 CS with the window washer tubes, as opposed to the later ones mounted on the bonnet.
Why did BMW change this? The bonnet looks better without them.

Strut bar - purpose and fitment

Today i tried to install my strutbar on Günters Golf CSL!
@ iconoclast6 , tomorrow I try to do the same on Kurt´s 2800CS with stock air filter, i will let you know the result :

Clickable thumbnails:

As you can see, on the passengers side no problem, but on the drivers side....no chance !

The wall between engine bay and ventilation/heating/wiper motor was not welded true-to-original !

For all of you, who are on my list, the measurement 135mm is very important :

Thoroughly enjoyed this thread and great piece of "E9"ngineering. Not clear if it was determined if the bar did fit the 2800 CS without modification. If not, are there other supplier alternatives (particularly since this production run is gone).

Lastly, for those who don't fully grasp the handling nuances, what problem(s) does the strut bar correct? Should you expect a flatter cornering, less roll, or is the bar intended to add structural integrity. Sorry for the need for support on the fundamentals. New to all this.

It did fit to the 2800 and 3,0cs , but only when you use the stock carbs !

If you have installed the 2 38-38 Webers like iconoclast6, there´s not enough space between airfilter housing and bulkhead.

Are there other supplier alternatives

Yes, there are other suppliers for similar strutbars:

Werner Hand Germany offered them on his HP, fabricated by Mangold, but you have to drill 3 new holes (distort for exact 45 degrees) for the bolts of the upper shock-absorber-bearing :

Another supplier is W&N / http://www.wallothnesch.com

They have only rigid strutbars, mine and the Mangold are adjustable.

What problem(s) does the strut bar correct?

It makes the car stiffer, so you answered you own question ! :-D

I also use a bar in the trunk:

Sorry, no other picture.
I have done them only for myself, its made of steel, and not for sale.
A custom-made item, not fully developed.......
Its clipped on the tower with 3 screws, like a clamp.
I still found no way to produce them at a cheap rate, and make it for easy adjustment to different coupes.

You english-spoken folks would say its half-baked, botchy ! :) I have an aversion to sell things I have second thoughts about.....

Hi Guys,

Just caught up with this thread. For us folks with 38-38 Webers and a stock
air-filter... it appears that Orangerner's superb efforts, including the 3.0 CSI inscription,
will not fit for us. At least not yet, if I'm following this correctly...

Just a quick FYI, I was also unsuccessful at fitting the W&N strut bar as well.

What did work, was a custom strut from Ireland Engineering via Carl Nelson.
If interested, please make certain you advise Carl that you need the 2nd prototype
that worked for Chuck.

Best,

Chuck

The latest part 2...Bar installed. Plenty left to do in the engine bay yet one has to stop somewhere, never perfect it seems. Time to start driving!!!

There may be a possibility for a restage of my strut bar!
Anyone interested here in this forum?
Because I have to re-calculate the price and order the casting parts....
