I need to replace a dinged cap; I'm assuming that it needs to be pushed out behind the wheel, so the wheel has to come off? Thanks.

Yes! Very secure method of mounting caps and they will never fall off. Wish Alpina caps were rear mounted also and not just haphazardly clipped on from the front.
