What is this 3-prong on/off switch for?

Hi,
I've asked myself this many times before..
I didn't find anything exact in the parts catalog, at w/n or online, I suspect for E3 (3.0S automatic), the switch next to the ashtray in the center console..?

It has three prongs, not like the 2002 and E21 2 prongs for the rear window defroster.
I think the third prong is for an indicator light.

Does anyone know where it originally comes from and what it controls or does anyone know the correct part number?

Last example pic is from a 1970 E3 3.0S Automatic.

Thanks
Sebs

I would think that all rear defrost and fog light switches would have a bulb to indicate that they are on. You could still till that the switch was on (closed) by noting the position of the knob, but not nearly as easily as with a light. I would also guess wiper speed.

Hey @Mike Goble and @Dick Steinkamp ,

Do either of you know the answer to Seb's question? I could keep making bad guesses all day. Hold my beer...

That operated the optional Hirschman electric garage door opener, which was only available inside the old geographic boundaries of the states of Bavaria, Baden and the western Kingdom of Prussia. This was owing to licensing agreements with Philips whose territory was the remaining northern provinces, and a long-forgotten French manufacturer that controlled the rest of the territories. Needless to say, there are people living in Alsace-Lorraine and Saxony who to this day cannot get their garage doors open.

I'm just wondering.

It's the same switch as the BMW 2002 rear defrost switch switch with has originally 2 prongs, but 1 prong is always cut off.
And this switch is equal to the 02 defrost switch but the 3rd prong isnt cut off.
I could never find it anywhere in the parts catalogues, so its still a mistery for me b'cause I dont know where its originally for / from.
Ok, I think its a simple on/off switch and the 3rd prong is for an on/off indicator light..

Orange hirschmann garage door opener switch, also for fog lights

Hi Sebs,

Everything I said below about it being a garage door opener switch was completely made up. My point was that other people like Mike and Dick can probably give you a good answer, and any thing I say is just a guess.

That is absolutely true, and half of them were caught inside the garage, and the other half outside. Rumor is that the ones inside have survived on a diet of cheese, which is an effective way of preserving milk over a winter, or over an indefinite garage lock down. The ones outside are much better fed.

My Bav isn't in my home garage right now, but I found this old, in progress picture

The orange switch on the left is for the rear window defrost. On the right is the hazard (4 way flasher) switch. Both are push on push off and both are lit when on.
