I had a search on here and can't find any advice on how to remove the half shafts.

I have bought new rear backing plates and looks like the shafts will have to be removed to get the plates on.

any advice would be great or point me in the direction of a how to guide

Thats right, to replace the brake backing plates you have to remove the drive flange. The nut is on v.f.t., torque value 300 plus ft/lb, 3/4 breaker bar and 5 foot pipe help. I broke 1/2 inch breaker bar doing a 2002 once. Good time to do wheel bearings while you're in there. I can scan the relevant manual pages if you like. The flange nut is the only difficult part.
