I have a 72 CSi Italian delivery w/o the rear fog light . Does it take a mod to the body to install this or is it just a matter of unscrewing the current panel & replace with this panel in order to get the fog lamp setup ?

Thanks

You would have to cut a hole to accommodate the light and drill 2 holes for the mounting screws If your car did not come with the fog light from the factory.

To be honest I don't have that experience with these cars. My car ( a European 1969 2800cs) does Not have a provision for the rear fog in the back panel. The other members may know if the later cars have the cut out

I just installed this rear fog light and (aluminum) panel in my ‘73 Euro (Dutch delivery). The body cutout and attachment holes were already there in the car.

The aluminum panel does not look as nice as the chrome, and I’m think about cutting the chrome panel to install with the fog light.

Any thoughts on this?

I have seen an aluminum panel that was chrome plated by a chrome shop. I think an experienced shop could do the same to yours.

Yep, other cars can have the cutout from factory. It depended on if the country of sale required it by law or not.

Chrome plating is possible but aluminum is much flexible than the chrome finish layer. Typically it is not recommended as it may peel off due to bending (even during assembly) or even vibrations and such a panel is prone to all of that phenomenons.

I was told much better shiny effect can be achieved with buffing and special chemical/wax coat over in the end to protect against environment impact. But this has to be renewed from time to time to keep the part nice.

Interesting!
As the aluminium version of rear panel is a real thin gauge plate with not much bow to it, it is indeed very floppy.

The early versions of e9 were made with chromed ebrass panel; that one has more stifness to it, being about twice as thick.

Why not cut your chrome panel, and have it rechromed?

Yes. Chrome over metal (copper in details) looks much better than polished aluminum in regards to chrome "shade" of the taillights frames (chrome over ZAMAC btw).

As it was discussed before on some topic, it was expected metal panel was only in 2800CS but it appears the change was later as there are metal panels with the opening.
