I would like to convert me 71 2800CS to electronic ignition. What is needed. Are there parts off later cars to do this? What years? Bob

+1 one the Pertronics.

It´s the chaepest, invisible once installed, easiest to install and works very very well. I couldn´t see the point in using anything else.

You could get a transistorized distributer out of a late model 528i (from 79 to 81) along with the control module (and some wiring). This would be a nice factory upgrade for an older car.

I also found this article on the firstfives board:
http://www.firstfives.org/faq/timing/timing_for_modified_engines.PDF

The last blurb "Points Style Distributors" discusses a couple different aftermarket add-ons (Aldon, Europa, Demon) that only require modifying the distributor.

Transistorized Ignition Module

I think this is what Cornice Jumper is referring to as the ignition upgrade for modified engines. Came with the car so I can't speak to any improvement as a result but certainly never any problems.

replace coil?

When you guys installed the pertronix (ignitor or ignitor II, I assume?) did you need to change the ignition coil as well?

You don't need to - but it wouldn't hurt.
I did so on my 2002 'way back when' I installed a Pertronix.

The PO of my coupe did so as well whe he installed a Pertronix earlier as well.

He used an MSD coil (for the coupe). I used a Pertronix one (for the 2002).
