Hi all,
My passenger door has been making a rattling/clunking sound when closing so I decided today was the day to look into it. Most of the offending sound was fixed by adjusting a guide rail, but I did find a lead weight at the bottom of the door. As you can see in the photo it is about 4.5" long and has a disintegrating fiber pad on one side. I assume this thing is OEM, but I couldn't tell a difference in door closing when I took it out. Given that the door is already not exactly lightweight I can't imagine that an extra few ounces - even at the back of the door - would make much difference. So, anybody know if this serves a real purpose?

Thanks CHris. Despite the fact that I called it a "lead weight", I don't know why I didn't use those words to search.
