Hello- I'm planning a trip to Netherlands and Belgium to look at several BMWs and Porsches. Goal is just to meet with some different shops and go over the process with importing, basically getting a feel for the whole process. I have imported about ten cars. Federally, not much is new and is pretty straight forward as long as it is at least twenty five years old. It is individual States that seem to move the goal posts. The expert is not the guy who has done it the most, but the guy who has done it last. Personally, I absolutely do not get the whole container thing; just go RoRo unless it is too valuable, then fly it. I never bothered with insurance until about a year ago when lithium batteries sank a modern RoRo ship. Have fun!
