Has anyone seen this. Does it look legit. If so, is anyone near Pals Springs or have a person to do a PPI?

That looks like a good deal Chris. Try to get the owner to take more pictures of the critical areas: fender wells, sills, underside, etc. Palms Springs is dry as a bone most of the time and that means a lot when buying a coupe. My sienna coupe was a San Diego car from new and its lack of rust is a testament to being in an arid envrionment. I don't know any coupe guys there, but it's pretty easy to get in and out of Palm Springs if you wanted to fly in and inspect it yourself. I would speak to the owner and see if he is willing for you to drive it/tow it to CoupeKing (LA) or to LaJolla Ind (San Diego) for a PPI.

Chris, If I weren't already working on an E9, I'd be on a plane tonight to go see this one (and on the phone now to try to put it under contract). Seriously. This one looks like a great condition survivor and usable for many years.

I would not fore go an inspection and more photos though. It could still have mechanical issues due to lack of use or odd maintenance schedule. Call the seller and shop that maintains this car to see if you can get it looked at and photos sent ASAP. If the seller let's you put the car on hold pending PPI, then I'd contact the local CCA chapter officers to get a recommendation of what shop to use.

I generally would not use the shop that maintains it because they might be biased. I bought another car once that was inspected by the owner's maint shop (a very well know regional specialist in the brand who always had a large shop full of $$$ cars). Nearly everything they reported about the mechanical condition was wrong, costing me $18k because everything from end to end was bad and needed full rebuilding. It even had the wrong brake shoes ... But the shop was loyal to the local owner because it wanted repeat business. Rare exceptions exist (our own Mario is honest as the day is long, or cold if you're in NE), I had good luck with Carl Nelson in the past. I would trust SFDon and RPerry.

Good Luck

I spoke with a family member last night. He said they have had almost 60 calls in 24 hrs. I am trying to do as you've suggested from 3000 miles away including offering more than the asking price. I have someone in place to inspect it for me and am trying my best to lock it down.
Thanks, and wish me good luck!

The value of a non-refundable deposit

It has helped me in the past (especially at long distances) to send the owner a non-refundable deposit via PayPal. That will usually distance you from the competition. Putting out $500 to keep it off the market for a day or two is worth it because it gives you time to catch your breath during 'the chase'

I am still trying to find out exactly who the owner is. It is supposedly being handled through an estate. I am trying to get to the executor.

Just spoke with family member. They took deposit after an inspection from someone in San Diego for 65K!

Wow that is a lot for a Coupe of unknown pedigree. I suppose the PPI came out rosy.

but

true, but given the buyer was from sd, and did an inspection, very likely carl and co were involved, so very knowledgeable couple people involved.

I saw this when it was 12.9 OBO. I was like damn, this is the deal of a lifetime. Then it later changed to 29.9k.

How do you get a deposit for 65k when the price is 29.9k?

Sadly, this will be one of those quiet sales which confirms a valuation of these cars that goes undocumented and unrecognized.

With 60 people calling, and offers above the asking price, anything is possible.

Further, if it is an estate sale, the executor has an obligation to get the maximum price. If all these crazy car people want to bid > the asking price for some old car, the executor can't turn the money down.

I was told the father felt the value of the car was 13K. When the phone rang off the hook they upped it and it kept ringing. There are also several older Ferrar's, Mercedes, with this estate as well, so I was told.

Dont remember ever seeing this car when I lived in PS in the mid 80s. Did sew a few nice garages when I was delivering pizzas in HS, lol! Lotsa nice cars squirreled away around there.

Watched a Lambo Countach have its wing 'ripped off' at a stop in traffic by crazed 'spring breakers', driver and date stayed in the car and let it go.... that year Spring Break made national news when the college invaders drained a hotel pool and filled it with empty bottles.....Spring Break was never the same after THAT year.....

But, I wasn't really looking for/at E9s then, as I was floggin my Dad's TR6 with almost open pipes. Great sound. And... oh, that poor company delivery mini-truck..... good times.

;-)

Sorry you missed out Chris. I was lucky with my San Diego coupe; when I saw it advertised on craigslist, I immediately called the owner while deployed in Iraq and arranged for him to take it to Carl the next day. I told the owner that if it passed the PPI, he could leave it at LaJolla Ind and I would send him the money. Fortunately the seller was very accomodating and Carl was super helpful as usual, so it all worked out. It probably helped that it was an automatic and sienna, so it didn't generate as much interest as the one you pursued. Have you called Carl to see if he knows of a coupe for sale?

I've got a couple of irons in the fire here on the East coast. I hope to be behind the wheel of an E9 by this summer. Mario Langsten is assisting me.
If any of you know of a fine original or properly restored example, please let me know.
Thanks to all!

Don't think it's worth $65k

Just spoke with family member. They took deposit after an inspection from someone in San Diego for 65K!

The E9 market is a little but nuts these days. That car wasn't nicer than the E9 I stupidly sold on to a great guy out west. One owner is a really cool thing because there's a chance you'll get the whole history if they saved all the paperwork.

Keep looking. Be ready to move on the next one. Keep a cool head ... there are other good cars out there.
