First coupe

I am close to buying my first coupe. The car needs a lot of work although it is a dry so. Calif car. I would like to confirm what I know about the car and if possible learn more. Is there a way through the vin to do this?
Sorry if this has been asked in the past. I am new to this form.

I did not. Is it ok to reg. coupes if you don't own them? Any ideas on my original question?

There is next to nothing the VIN will tell you other than build date and color, that is available from BMW Archive. If it was a CA car in 1996 you might find a smog check history on the Bureau of Automotive Repair website.
