could you define the process exactly, were they rechromed, or reanodized ?
thanks

I interpreted it as the grille body was chromed (not rechromed since they never came in chrome). The slats are polished and clear coated (not anodized). You can definitely see the difference between the chrome and the polished aluminum. Looks good though and the price seems fair.

@deQuincey @Markos summed it up ;)

Slots I could also have rechromed but I would have to drill small holes somewhere so that they hang them and sunk into the tubs. Plus chrome easily cracks since slots are thin especially when putting them back into slot holes.

i thought aluminium was best anodized, and not chromed
good to know

You can chrome aluminum but it can flake off easily over time. Chromed aluminum wheels were all the rage in the mid 90’s. They certainly didn’t hold up on the midwest rust belt. I wouldn’t worry about the kidney grille though given the delicate use of these vehicles.

I think @daddywad chromed plated his belt line. Several folks have done it.

Longer lasting for sure but less shine and also I could not find shop in my area to anodize them when i was searching. I found one but way to expensive since original finish has to be de-anodized than polished than anodized. That is what I have been told. Easier, faster, cheaper to remove anodized surface with polish and have them chromed.

what Speedway does is to polish and then ceramic clear coat. it looks great. not as 'bright' as chrome but quite nice. i get that Speedway is not convenient to Slovenia though. now for my curiosity ... how different is the finish on the fins vs. the kidney?

I could also have them polished here in fact I had them polished and ceramic coat applied on my first trial.

When polished they were shinny enough but after ceramic coat applied they get more dull (no as much dull as for example layer of lack) but ceramic coat does not last long and scratches are seen way to fast.

I had my windshields trim polished and ceramic coat applied only because I was afraid that lack or chrome would crack during installation of belt into the rubber.

But price of polish + ceramic coat was cheaper and in case of any damage to the grill you can simply polish it again that is a plus.

Just got another frame from the chrome shop.

Slots were polished. When I put it back togehter I will have ceramic coat applied on slots.

Hi guys

I have another restored grill with slots painted in black.
Mounting points were totally destroyed so I made new plates with pressed nuts for fixing and fixed them with liquid metal.

Price for this set would be 250€ + shipping.

I also have another set of chromed frame with no slots. Mounts were broken off and threads were drilled to mount it proper.

If anyone would be interested write me.

Very nice for those with dented frames. Rarely are the slats messed up, which can easily be anodized black.

Good luck! I'd be interested, but my grille is almost mint (just needs a polish).
