Ha! I saw a nice wooden steering in that e3 just before it slammed in the tree.
With the nice long hood, giving quite some space for deformation, the result isn't actually that bad compared to other cars of the day.
Just for fun, look up the story of colonel Stapp, he was in the US army in this period and did similar things but with rocket powered sleds. They used volunteer soldiers, but he also buckled up himself for some tests. I met him once in the US, at a conference named after him. He explained how he would come home in the evening sometimes, having lost his eyesight for a few days because of the tremendous forces of the deceleration.
He told his wife only what they did after he retired.
