Anybody know if it is OK to lube the cam inside the dis that operates the release contacts? Thanks.

You mean the ignition distributor? Yes, the cam is meant to be lubricated with special distributor cam grease. Bosch actually sells it in a tube, sold by various online, etc., vendors. While there, the felt underneath where the rotor attaches can benefit from 3 drops of 3-in-1 oil. Also lube the advance / retard linkage PIVOTS with 1 drop (only) of the 3-in-1 oil. Finally, if the advance/retard linkages rest on any kind of support bushing, lube this with the dist. cam grease.

Adding to Hans3's response, you have two cams: ignition points up top and the fuel injection trigger points below. Both should be greased with same point grease/lube.

Most of the replacement fuel injection trigger points seem to be equipped with with a grease-impregnated felt wick that presumably lasts the life of the points. (not in picture below) I don't think the manufacturers ever considered exactly how long some of those points have been around. I would not trust the wicks, if you have them and might consider amending the grease as you might with traditional ignition points (on the rubbing block and lightly over the entire cam) - but away from the contacts.

Thanks for the responses. The manual says the injection release points (the lower set) are maintenance free, but obviously they weren't thinking about 35 years into the future. So on with the grease!
