Bought a 2800CS project and have a camshaft question

I live in Jacksonville, Florida, and I recently purchased a 1971 2800CS that needs work (probably an understatement). I've wanted an E9 for over 30 years and finally pulled the trigger. Among other things, it has some valve tapping, and one of the lobes on the camshaft is worn. I'd ultimately like to do an engine upgrade, so I'm reluctant to go to the trouble of replacing the camshaft. However, an engine change may be many miles down the road. Does anyone have experience swapping out a camshaft and possibly going with a hotter camshaft to increase performance? Thanks!

SFDon talked me into a Schrick 284 cam for my stock engine, it's a great upgrade - more power in the mid to high revs but still idles smoothly.

At $400 plus machinist time, you might be better off swapping out the engine. Do you want to keep the carbs?

Thanks to both of you. I'll check on the Schrick and look at the overall cost. The carbs are not stock. The prior owner had webers installed.
