I have been lurking for quite some time and finally present my new project. It is a 1974 CSI, a car that i have followed for a couple of years through 3 owners, each time more added to it, condition deteriorating but the price coming down! It came with a 3-piece rear 'ducktail', full new and uninstalled Group 2 panels (DRM style), Compomotive split rims, plastic windows, 3.5 (early m30) engine and 5 speed. Although RHD, i think it was imported into the UK some 20 years ago, 'Alpina-ised' (i use that term conservatively), attended many trackdays in the 2000's after conversion to 3.5, and has been through Coys twice....and unsold twice.

The car is going off to Surface Processing in a couple of days for dipping. There is quite alot of filler in the bodywork, and whilst generally quite sound in some of the usual rust areas i know there is quite alot that still needs to be remedied.

The car will first and foremost be a race car, albeit road 'legal', my plans are evolving so could end as a historic racer but more likely for club racing here in the UK. The wide arches are unlikely to go on at this stage but i am contemplating a S38B38 conversion. The car is likely to evolve over the years (engine/bodywork) but still up in the air as to where i start.

I have attempted a couple of times to puchase CSL's, but for my use (and 2-3 times the price for a restoration basis car) decided a CSi would be a better base.

I currently have a BMW e30 320i race car which i built almost from a shell and race here in the UK in a production class. Somewhat dated but great fun and learning platform (although i have driven several thousand miles on track (mainly in a highly modified Porsche 968 Club Sport)) i suspect the e9 drive will be exaggerated....more power, more understeer, less grip....and all that weight!

Hey JP,

where about are you based? Great to see the car being restored - i saw it once at a track day at Castle Combe in about 2001 or 2002. I spoke with the owner who was a garage owner if i remember right.

Nice number plate!

Regards,

Rohan

I'm based in South Cheshire. Number plate gone, now on original number.

The car has some curious history. You are indeed correct, owned by a Robert Booker until a few years ago. I met him last year at his garage, very old and frail, and a little upset at the condition of his car now. He put his heart and soul into the car for a decade or so, modifying and tracking without hesitation or concern to authenticity, value etc. A real enthusiast and passionate about enjoying his car to the max. Assured him it would be thoroughly restored by another enthusiast with the same intentions - to track and enjoy.

You would have seen the car at Castle Combe in early 2001, i also have records/photographs of the car at other circuits over a 4+ year period. The car was at Castle Combe in 1999....you would have remembered it if you were there at the time....introduced himself (or rather the car) to the tyrewall!

The car and Robert were a regular feature in 'BMW Driver' magazine, plus i have a copy of 'BMW Car' with photo's of it on track.

The car was imported into the UK in 1977 (by a Doctor i think in the Bristol area) with all Alpina livery, front/rear Bat spoilers, 3-piece compomotive wheels etc. (currently have BMW searching for original build records - i think it was a metallic yellow/green when first built!) - edited to say that BMW have zero records on the car's 226 chassis number.

Ironically, I tried buying the car from Robert a few years ago but the price was too high. It was eventually sold (Essex way), the owner decimated the car, bought/installed lots of 'racing' kit, lost interest and part ex'd it to a Yorshire dealer against a Motorhome. It stood for upto a year outside in a compound with windows missing whereupon i happened upon it by chance and bought it - fraction of the price of the previous encounter and with all the added bits/expenditure.

Fundamentally i think it is a sound car, could never be a standard road car again but that is not my intention. I've tried buying CSL's in the past but this CSI represents great value for what i am doing and to be honest more appropriate considering the values of CSL's now.

Car back from from SPL after dipping, quite pleased with the condition, some repairs required but not too serious. Floors have gone a little thin in places, plus not standard previous repair so may replace them altogether. The car has had a number of repairs in the past, they are very solid but somewhat patchy looking. Will get these areas cleaned up. It is going to be a race car so not looking for a concours finish! Likely to get the general remedial work completed first then off to a race car specialist for a few tweeks, strengthening, turreting etc.

Not the greatest of videos, may redo it going around the car a bit slower to allow it to focus better.

3.5 m90, ported/polished head(possibly ex TWR), intake and throttle body, L jet, 282 cam, lightened/balanced crank/flywheel, dogleg cr box, lsd sideloader. In the interim going to stroke the m90, hc pistons, larger valves, triple 45's then when funds allow full race engine on carbs. Quite fortunate the car came with most of this plus split rims (now have c30 inner/outer rims), plastic windows, full bodykit, caged....and was very cheap.

Just had delivery of some repair panels, will be going to panel man in next few weeks, back to dipper for ecoating in August.
