Bo, What could go wrong with a running motor and a spinning pulley with a belt in it? No way you could get both sides ground down and as Steve noted it is more a function of belt width.
The belt that is on now fits the pulley just fine, apart from the fact that it is a bit too long. But when I compare the depth of the V of that pulley with others, this one seems unnecessarily large.
