The 1969 BMW 2800 GTS was an Italian coach built vehicle designed by Pietro Frua. Starting life as an E9 2800 CS, the exterior styling was completely redesigned into a fastback coupe. The front grill was angled and headlights were recessed back from the front edge of the hood. After being paraded around to different auto shows, BMW determined the vehicle did not get enough interest to enter mass production and remained a one off vehicle.

It was sold to an individual in Barcelona in 1971. It changed owners many times where it was repainted, swapped motors and fitted with a sunroof. The vehicle was up for sale in the Netherlands in 2000 where BMW Classic purchased it for a full restoration in 2017. After a 2 year restoration process, the vehicle was returned to its original color after many paint jobs over its life. A small flake of original paint was found inside the fuel door which was used as a sample to bring the vehicle back to its original color. The sunroof was removed and put back to a steel roof and the original carbureted M30 was put back in.

Typical of BMW it has the later valve cover and four plug water divider. This is the only e9 chassis the other three were e3.

Charlie Richardson, who ran the CS Register about 35 years ago, had one. It had been in an accident and the left front was crushed and the engine and transmission were gone. I wonder if it was ever restored?
