I am considering replacing the crusty rubber bushings etc. in my front steering/suspension and the rears also, can someone please list all the ones I will need to source and the best place(s) to get them? Are there other pieces I'll need along with the rubber ones like washers, pins etc? Is this something I can do with the car on jacks or is a shop needed with special spreading/compressing tools? Thanks.

Suspension

Steve,
You are always one step ahead of me...thanks for that! I also would like info in this regard. I have been sitting on the fence, hate to disassemble a decent driver for want of perfection. Winter here, so either get on with it or wait till next year once I have assembled all the bits.

I know W&N used to sell a bag of screws, nuts, bolts washers etc. All you needed for front and rear. Like 1000 pieces in total at an OK price.

And any of the dealers like W&N or Carl should be able to give you a list.

I swapped the bits around the swaybar while looking for my brake issue. Was quite doable.

Oh, remember the bits around the springs as well.

Me too...

+2. I have begun making this list in Excel, as it happens. It will be a little bit grueling. If nothing better has come up by the time I'm done, I would be happy to share.

I'll probably end up splitting my order between Rock Auto and the local BMW dealership if I had to guess.

Thank you for this! Do any of them need any special tool or press to get on/off? Or anyting pre-tensioned that might be an issue?

Most everything is done fairly easy. The big bushings need a homemade puller. ( Piece of conduit, plate, all thread, etc. Nothing that the average DIY guy can't make up from the depot.)

Holler if you get stuck.:)

I would renew the brake pin hardware. Cheap and helps keep the pads from dragging on the rusty ones.

So the tie rods and ball joints are not rebuildable, I need all new parts instead of just bushings? If so this is going to add up quickly!

Inspect everything first. There's a way to measure the ball joints in the manual.

Tie rod ends are $12-13.

And if you can buy control arms that already have new bushings in them like the 2002 get them, it may even be cheaper and then you avoid the hassle.
