So, given the corrosion on my battery cables, I decided my very first project on my e9 would be to replace the battery to starter and battery to alternator cables (the battery and battery ground strap were replaced immediately prior to sale). In doing so, I found I had only one other wire going to the alternator; a blue wire that went through a connector that was empty. If I am reading this wiring diagram correctly - http://www.e9coupe.com/tech/handbook/p_102.htm - there should be a voltage regulator - part 19 - corrected to the empty connector, with wires back to terminals on the alternator.

Should I be concerned that this voltage regulator is missing? Did replacement alternators come with internal regulators?

Your Alt has been replaced with an internal regulated one, only two wires, large red and small blue to warning light.

For overkill purposes I also ran a direct line from neg batt terminal to the alternator case.
