I've owned 3 BMW daily drivers. An e28, e34, and e39. My favorite was the '88 e28 528e (super eta) 5 speed. the right size, great seating position, big greenhouse, nimble...and even with the detuned motor it felt quicker than the two others (but probably wasn't).
I bought my '88, 535i in December 2018 with 60,000 original miles. It's my daily driver and I average over 1000 miles a month. After some teething pains, it is very sound; doesn't leak or burn any oil, plenty of power, and hardly a day goes by without someone giving it a hard look look, or commenting on it. If you can find an unmolested one with low miles, I recommend one.
Hanging out with Barney and his Turkis Squaretail.
Very nice 5 series indeed.....and low mileage! The owner I bought my coupe from also had a 5 that he bought new with 220,000 miles so I know you have plenty of driving left in that car
The car for sale has I think 240kms on it for those counting.
That was the plan, Mo. I'm in this car for less than $10K, even after swapping the auto for a 5 speed and completely updating the AC system. It's like a new car and has a LOT of life left. Insurance is cheap, and upkeep is so simple. I kept my eye out for several years...passing on most cars with over 200,000 miles. The interior is spotless...it sat in a garage for over 12 years after a divorce. It's now got new belts, hoses, brakes, fuel pumps, all fluids, some electrical stuff...
I wish it had about 50-100 more ponies, but I'm happy with it. It's bone stock.
That seems like a great car to enjoy for its simplicity.....I would agree keeping it stock will allow you to enjoy it like a new car -- One of the best more civilized BMW's IMHO.
