I’m going to suggest to just avoid California buyers until you get affirmation from someone like Caramel that blesses the sale in California.
49 normal states and then there is California…..

Ed B's reply to Don's request states that additional information on grey market vehicle registrations can be found at https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/. For those researching this issue and using our forum as a guide so as to do their own research, I quoted the relevant section of the arb rules in a previous discussion of this topic here: https://e9coupe.com/forum/threads/euro-1974-bmw-3-0csi-4-speed.45231/post-398818, with a reference to the source here: https://e9coupe.com/forum/threads/euro-1974-bmw-3-0csi-4-speed.45231/post-398679.

The arb rules are an important addition to Ed B's response because while he sets forth the procedure for testing grey market cars, he does not set forth the standards those cars need to meet when tested, which are found in the arb rules.

I agree with you that buyers should do their own research. What I object to is sellers telling lies about ease of California registration of foreign imports or the sure thing of Montana registration.
Norm..I get lied to every day. From the guy at Starbucks saying he knows exactly how to make a Cortado to the gal at the sandwich shop saying she will hold the mayo. Every buyer has to do their own research and checks what a car dealer (confirmed liars) tell them. All this back and forth for something that has nothing to do with anyone except the potential buyer is a waste of time. A buddy once said to me....I got problems and that ain't one of them. That seems to apply here. When did it stop being a common sense practice to: See a car in person or hire a specialist for a PPI- Check the title and ownership records- Check on the ability to title or register the car in your state. Seems to me that a big portion of the Bat purchasers forgo all three of these practices and then piss and moan when things don't go to plan... buyer beware.

Ummmmm- a coffee and a sandwich aren’t a $180,000.00 car.

Life is community moderated. From a father teaching his son how to stay out of trouble to Hans Christian Andersen relating the tale about the Emperors New Clothes- a community that stands together is stronger.

I don’t want a “Lord of the Flies“ existence for my children.

Liars and cheats need to be outed for the benefit of the community.

Experienced sellers spewing BS to try and get a better sale price in California with the possibility of an innocent trusting buyer believing him and having a car he can’t register is fraud and not cool period. If I was running BaT, I would ban such sellers for blatant misrepresentation.

I propose we change sfdon's user name to "sf 'it takes a village' don."

All joking aside, Don embodies this community belief every day through his generosity with his time, knowledge, and the efforts he puts into helping out with hard to find parts and his network of experts who can repair some of the unobtanium ones. Oh yeah, and running down details on registering gray market cars in Cali too.
