Up for sale is an original 380mm ATI-3 wheel made by Italvolante. This a a fairly rare wheel to find especially in this nice of condition, and from what I understand the 2202344 model is a first generation version that was made specifically for e9’s and 2002’s, the hub that came with mine fits was meant for e9's with the proper horn ring, also fits 02's.

Historically the wheel was used for factory race cars such as Procar series (M1) and DRM (German Racing Series with 3.5 CSL Batmobile) and later in the e30 M3 in DTM (then with Indianapolis engraved on the wheel), It was also available for street cars: e9 coupe, 02, e21, e12 (only 1 year). The wheel was not a factory option in the 02/e9 extra listings, but was presented in the showrooms of the dealers and it was pretty expensive. Way more expensive than a Petri from what I was told. So the later wheels mostly available with the BMW Motorsport logo were later models sold at the time when e12/e21 were produced and e9 and 2002 were out of production.

The wheel in stunning original condition, it is almost as nice as the NOS one I sold recently. Please look at the pictures. Plug and play in your Coupe!

Asking price is $750 shipped CONUS for the whole set up.

Hi John,

Your wheel looks very nice and right around market rate for an original Motorsport wheel with hub. The hub is early an early and period correct ribbed steel 522. The later hubs were covered in a smooth plasticwith a late 70's, early 80's collapsible mesh (similar to that briefly found on momos). This collapsible hub on your wheel is on par with a e9-period petri.

I'm not sure that I agree that the ATI3 came first and ATI1 came last. I can show you pictures of an ATI3 with a KBA numbers on it, and an ATI2 with a date stamp of 1983 or 1987. The significance of both of these examples is that KBA numbers and dates didn't show up until the 80's. Honestly I'm not sure what the significance of the 2-3 numbers are. Unless someone has hard facts on the meaning of ATI1 vs ATI3, I would consider it irrelevant.

What does seem relevant to me:

1. It is in nice condition
2. The 522 hub is correct
3. It is 380mm, not a smaller 365mm
4. It doesn't have an Indianapolis Formel engraving on the front
5. Your wheel has no dates or KBA numbers

My impression is that the ATI codes do not refer to the model but to the diameter of the wheels :

ATI1 350-355mm
ATI2 360-365mm
ATI3 375-380mm

This is why other models of Italvolanti wear the same references as our classic Motorsport steering wheels.

Here is an ATI3 (375mm) of another type :

An ATI2 (365mm) :

This is ATI1 (350mm) :

I wonder if people will get tired of us always going full-nerd on steering wheels? ;)

Well, first let me repeat I know only a little about these wheels, so there is always that caveat. I do try to do as much background work on the few wheels I sell, one because its interesting and I enjoy it, two because I think buyers would like to know. I did a miserable job describing the history of this make and model, 2275xxx is correct, the ATi-3 refers to the size, the BMW part number (2202344) on the front of the wheel is what distinguishes these wheels, not the ATi-3 (or Ati-2 or Ati-1) marking. I do feel a responsibility to get the facts correct, so I hope this helps clear things up a bit, and please feel free to post any additional information.

Additionally this is one model that I routinely search for since it was produced for e9's and 2002's, and I can tell you they are very, very hard to find especialy in this kind of condition. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened this one as the condition was much better than I even expected, its almost as nice as the NOS one I sold recently. Just a beautiful period correct wheel in the perfect size.

Happy to answer any questions or take reasonable offers, but as Mark noted it is right around market rate for this wheel. John

Very good thanks for clearing that up! Makes perfect sense.

I also found this which may clear things up... or add more confusion. It’s obviously a later advertisement, but also seems to corroborate the nomenclature based on size. The part number seems to be the indicator of different wheels along with the overall design of course.

Very nice wheel, I've got one on my coupe and must say it feels fantastic, much nicer to hold than my 38 Petri. Was the foam cover an option on all or just some? Mine came with the cover but prefer it without.

This model did not come with a cover, but I do have an NOS cover with the Motorsport logo available for an additional cost if a buyer is interested in both.

It’s in the backlog. I send a wheel to eastern europe as soon as the other arrives. My Le Mans arrived but is stuck in customs (again). I have a few other wheels ahead of that one. ;)
