@HB Chris It looks to me like the actual tray from the early E12, E21, E24 is the same size and shape as the late E9 tray and would fit where the E9 tray fits. The difference is the tool selection. Since the spots for the tools are molded into the tray the actual PNs would be different for different tool sets. I think you could mount the 71111117105 tray (and possible others) in a late E9 if you were not that concerned about the originality of the tool set.

I've found that the later tool carrier is still pretty easy to find used in good condition. Several models following the E9 also used it.

And this is the correct late e9 toolbox. I got this on ebay a while back incase I buy a 74 or later coupe at some point.

I have one of the new styles also. No problems.

I think that the tool tray and set of tools in our E3/E9s is a signature part of the car. It is one of those items that demonstrates how much BMW was paying attention to the details. I don't know of any other mass produced car that was doing something similar. Such a "finished" way of supplying tools and spares. A far cry from a tool roll thrown into the trunk.
