My name is Tom. I have a 1971 BMW 2800CS. Its has an automatic transmission that doesn't work. I want to swap in a manual transmission. I want to do it myself. Any step by step list out there that will help me do this?

I want to do the transmission first before anything else.

Tom,

what your search may lead you to, but there is a great article in the tech info section from none other than Carl Nelson. http://www.e9coupe.com/tech/5speed.html

I could help

Hi,
I have done a retrofit of a 5-speed Getrag 265CR instead of the original 4-speed.
The installation is straightforward since there are quite some documentation existing on this subject.
The hardest for me is to find a way to shorten the driveshaft; in Arkansas everyone is afraid of self-combusting if they touch to a BMW part.

There is what sounds like a good 5 speed OD transmission with the ability to add the speedometer apparatus on the "parts" for sale in the classifieds, which are at the bottom of the e9 Forums. Might want to check that out.

To add to what has already been posted:

This thread is useful because I sorted through the various instruction sets and detailed the bolts necessary to install the Getrag 5 speed:

http://www.e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19822

Here is a thread I posted clarifying how to hook up the reverse light circuit (I found Carl's instructions very confusing):

http://www.e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18926

And here is a discussion of the use of a stamped metal support to hold up the tranny rather than a cast aluminum support, which may not be as durable:

I wouldn't buy an '85 model for a swap from auto unless I had the speedo gears in hand first.

No brakes, really nice write up, maybe a couple extra steps but the pictures will definitely inspire confidence in first-timers.

Thank you!

I applaud your effort- just wish we could get a tutorial without all the extra steps.

My pleasure guys.

EDIT: It isn't necessary to remove pedal box. But the pedal does have to be modified to fit (certain years may drop right in), there is a lug that interferes. I used this opportunity to powder coat some components.

Removing the pedal box, booster, M/C and starter isn't necessary is it? Was that the only way to open the clutch master hole which is already there even on an auto?

I did mine without removing any of that stuff.
