New blue tool kit cloths sourced by me. Exactly as original and complete with proper logo. I can also furnish the valve adjusting tool shown in the picture. $40 for the cloth shipped and $10 for the valve tool OR $43 for thr pair.

Bert, I know this topic has been brought up in the past several times but where do you have proof of a blue towel being supplied with E9's? Are you just saying its cool to have one with our cars? Seems kinda pricey for a non-original piece.

FYI, the late great Murray Fowler had in-person proof of what came with and didn't come with the E9 and its been agreed on by most that these style "rags" came with the later 3/5/6/7 series cars. Just curious where your historical data comes from.

I have looked at b&w photos of our tool kits in both the 2800CS and 3.0CS and CSi owners manuals.
Neither contains a cloth, rag, or towel. "Sourced by me" seems to give these cloths a patina of authenticity they do not seem to deserve.
And, I have checked a sales brochure for the 733i dated February 1978. Not only is there no cloth or towel in the photo of the tool kit, there is no place for one. This 7 series tool kit is a different configuration altogether. I can not speak for the 3 and 5 series, perhaps someone has a brochure with a photo of their tool kits.

It seems to me that $40. is about $35. too much for a shop cloth one can buy in bulk for about .25 cents(even adding a couple of bucks for silk screening). A cloth that did not come in the tool kit either from the factory or the dealer is not, in my opinion, "original" and no one needs one to make their tool kit complete.

In another post someone said they made the valve adjustment tool from a nail. Penny nails are a couple of bucks a pound. Gives me pause.

I don't think he's trying to deceive anyone, it's clear the cloths and tool are repops. Lots of people want a blue cloth for their tool kit, correct or not (he's not saying they came in the e9 kit originally), Murray and other threads have always made it clear they did not. Good luck making one of the valve tools like his from a penny nail. Small price to pay to complete your tool kit if it's missing. My $.02.

Yes and no. If they're repos and advertised that way then anyone purchasing one would know that they didn't come with the car originally and are just for an added touch. In my book it doesn't have that kind of value. $40? If I sourced a period correct coffee cup (whatever that is) and put a BMW logo on it, then I implied that it came with old BMW's, maybe from the dealer, and priced it at $48.95, the price would suggest that its something special. If I priced it at $4.95 it would imply that its just a mug with a logo on it.

Capitalism at its finest, and I'm perfectly fine with that, except that I'm the keeper of the forum that allows this to happen. I need to ask the questions...

i still have one that came with my Bavaria, when i bought it in '85. what i used it for back then was to wipe off my tools - after i used them ... and after i wiped them off with a red shop rag. i ALSO proudly have one of Bert's too.

OK Guys;
Since giving my son my 2000CS several years ago,
Here is the info that tells the story.and after owning fifteen or so BMWs I am now BMWless.
While most of you have important things to do,Golfing,Baseball Games,Soccer,Pleasure Rides showing off your Classic BMWs,Going to the Beach, I have my one good eye focused on my computer five to seven hours a day searching for BMW parts for people I have never met, except for Bavbob, and most likely due to health issues and my age will never get to meet. Am I crazy? Yes I am. Do I love it? Yes I do.
For the life of me I can not understand the reasoing of some of the members. I see where a member is looking for a certan screw and wants it to be original, or a feeler gauge, but wont take a repro. Now I have to wonder why these same people want to make sure a Bue Cloth, that does not even belong in their model BMW,have to be an original.
I think that a person like Bert or evan myself who does this as a "Hobby" and make a few bucks on each deal for the time and effort, and all those phone calls to complete strangers begging for tools and other items to make a member happy. This man deserves, not only a THANK YOU but also a PAT on THE BACK for all he does. I know for a fact RECOGNITION is much more gratifying than the few dollars that might be made.
Thanks For taking the time to read this thread.
Koopman
PS. Do you think it's to late at age 73 to become a speech writer, maybe for Trump?

The following is a list of BMW models that the Blue Cloth (Mechanics Rag) was included in the tool box.
Model Year
E21 75-83
E30 81-94 I purchased one new and there was no Blue Cloth.
E26 89-00
E12 72-81
E28 80-97
E34 87-96
E39 96-03
E32 85-94
E38 93-01
E31 89-99
E36 94-02 I purchased one new and there was no Blue Cloth.

My E24 toolbox came with a blue one just like the one in question here.
Having one sure beats cars where you reach around and only find dirty kleenex...

And a valve adjustment tool is just a few cents worth of wire as well.

Do you earn concours points for adjusting your valves with a tool you just paid $35 for? Some of these concours tool kits are a bit overkill, soon these cars are going to be relegated to trailer queen status and never driven again. What's the point? Another friend made a longer one out of the copper core of a piece of romex. It's actually a much easier to use tool.

Sorry you see it that way. But if you are a shade tree type guy, why spend any time or effort bending wire, as an Allen wrench will work just fine.

The point being, at least for myself, is to find as many original parts as I can to put back on my car. Create a garage queen? I don’t think so, but rather another facet of the hobby for the hell of it,
and seeing how original I can get it to and the fun challenge of finding a part

Oh, and where did the $35 number come from? If that’s the case, I can see why you have become a ‘Wire Bender”

I don’t need more proof as I have sold over 300 of the cloths world wide over the last 3 1/2 years. It’s your perogative to be doubtful but I think the numbers speak for them selves.
