I was taking my wife out to pickup her car that was in the shop on a beautiful sunny morning drive across the golden gate bridge. So on our approach we took the seanic route through the presideo then there is a short approach onto the bridge.

That is when I had to slow down because there was no hole in the oncoming traffic for me to jump into. That is when it happened... I was rear ended!

Not real hard, but hard enough that it bent the bumper, the mounts and did some damage to the body where the bumper mounts to the body. Also it looks to have pushed the mount on the driver side qtr panel but I cant tell if there is damage there until the bumber is removed.

So it looks like bumber are still available through BMW but I dont see all the parts (Like the quarter panel mount) on realoem here.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=3451&mospid=47807&btnr=51_3423&hg=51&fg=15

Anybody know if these are still available? Or better yet have a rear bumper lying around?

Sorry to hear about the mishap. Hope the driver wasn't putting lipstick on or texting!

Don't have any leads on bumpers (sorry) but am curious to know how the insurance companies (assuming the other motorist is insured) handle the repair. I sometimes wonder what would happen if some witless driver with inadequate insurance hits me.

I have Hagerty and feel pretty confident that they'd "step up", given their collector car specialists. Just would hate to see them try to get away with giving you $500 and calling it a day.

Acat2002 has an excellent point. I too am curious as to how the insurance co. handles this. I would think that most of us have an 'collectors car, antique, classic etc" insurance. I never had to make a claim on my coupe. Are they not obligated to pay for a new bumper? BTW, hope your' OK and damage wasn't all that bad besides the bumper.

I have hagerty as well but I hope that it all gets handles thru the persons insurance that hit me and not hagerty.

I dont think there any limitations to driving in my policy I just have to have a garage that is kept in and have another insured vehicle that is used as my primary transportation.

Nobody was hurt luckly thanks for asking Andre.

It isnt going to be cheap to repair it. I had a conversation with Eric at the The coupeking and just to replace the bumper alone with one that is in the condition mine was is $1500 - 2K. Thats just the bumber and no repair work.

I keep you posted after I contact the insurance company.

I've got one at my garage in Maine. It's a 6 out of 10 as I recall. haven't looked at it in a number of years.

Bad news is that I won't be over there until Thanksgiving.

Let me know.

I had insurance through a specialty insurance co. but I switched to my main carrier, State Farm, after they quoted me something close to the specialty carrier. They had, basically, the same coverage with 2500 miles per year, garaged, agreed value etc. but I felt more confident that any problems I may have would be covered more effectively. On top of that my umbrella liability policy with State Farm (probably any other major carrier) is in effect when I have my Coupe out. You may want to check with your own main insurance carrier because I think many of them are in the process of "discovering" the classic/collector market.

My coupe got rear ended a few years ago, just slight damage. The other driver's insurance company lowballed the repair offer. I gave them a printout from RealOEM that showed that just a new bumper overrider would cost more than what they first offered. They called some boneyards to get used part prices and found nothing available. They came back with a very reasonable offer for new parts the second time.

Hagerty has always been prompt in inspection, research, and payments for me...totally fair to the terms of the policy.

I believe (not sure) Hagarty is now owned by Allstate. That gives you a company with collector car experience and the backing of a large carrier. Sorry about your car. Any settlement yet? I often spend time looking in my rear view mirror wondering when an antidepressant and xanax loaded texter is going to do the same to me or mine. - Paul

Thank you. It's good to know the process should an accident happen.

Well I have a written estimate from the coupeking that is $5k for the repairs. The adjuster from USAA (The girls who hit me) came back with $2500.

So I told him I'm going to file the claim with Hagerty and have them represent my case. So I will see if Hagerty handles it better. I'm pretty sure they will.

The adjuster priced out my bumber for straighten and rechrome at $350.00. First off I dont believe it can be staightened correctly. And 73 rear bumber cores arnt all that easy to find.

I will wait and see what happens with Hagerty.

I believe their insurance has the obligation of making you whole. The repaired coupe will not be worth what it was before the accident. When you sell it you will need to inform the buyer about the accident. Keep that in mind when negotiating and try to figure in what that value will be.- Paul
