I've thought about getting one of these Jerry cans (they come up on ebay Germany every so often) but that space under the tire is reserved for a spare fuel pump and other ignition components that ride full time there.

If you're intersted in one of these, there are 2 sizes, not sure if this one is the larger or smaller, but the smaller is the one that fits in a 14" wheel.

I wouldn't call these accessories super rare as they were marketed towards many different German Car makes in a variety of shapes and sizes and available through sources other than the dealers. With the advent of lighter weight and potentially more durable plastics, I wonder if these are currently being produced. They were probably never very popular except for third world markets with limited gas supplies. Factory installed plug-in radiator heaters and blankets are probably equally uncommon.

If you actually planned to use one, it would be advisable to check that spout gasket before leaving it in the trunk.
