Just replaced the steering coupler with one from Ireland Engineering. The spring behind the previous coupler wasn't in great shape and I did not replace it. Will that be a problem? I'm not sure what purpose such a weak spring served. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Jeff

None of the E9's nor E3's I have owned or worked on have had the "spring" you describe. However, I have encountered a coiled wire similar to your description on 2002s.

On the 02, the coiled wire functions as a means of grounding the horn contacts to the body. There are obviously exceptions, but on the E9 the coupler typically has a small braided grounding wire.
