I have a 1973 3.0 CS for sale. It is in pretty good shape, small rust in panel behind front tires. It has been taken apart and now trying to get the energy to get it back together. Seats Need upulstering. I ran very good before I took it apart. I was thinking that I had the money and energy to put it back together. The engine is pulled and It needs new rings, front main seal and that is it.

I am sure there are many questions. Great car and it was running well before I took it apart. I wanted to cherry it out. ran out of time and money.

$12,500

Whoa, is that a factory black/red interior car???

Automatic?

Sunroof?

AC?

Man, wish I had the room for it. Looks like perhaps a killer buy if it's solid. Of course, more pictures would be needed in all the crucial areas.

Good luck! Sorry to hear of your situation, but I totally get it.

New buyer, I wouldn't bother w/rebuilding that engine and just put a B35 in that sucker!

This car is exactly 60 VIN digits later than mine. Love the black on red color combo. GLWS. If still available in a few weeks, this may have to find its way to Wisconsin.

@bimbill and I took a look at this car back in October. Bill owns and restored a gorgeous (show quality) coupe and has infinitely more experience than I. He was definitely less optimistic but I think that the car is a diamond in the rough. The car has also been priced to sell since we last took a gander.

One of the floor pans was replaced with sheet. The front lower fenders need work. The driver’s shock tower has been stitched up a little, but not in your typical area where it meets the fender. The nose had a 2mph bump and looks fixable without the use of an angle grinder or welder.

Overall I found the car surprisingly dry. I pulled the seats, the front carpet, and snapped pics of the dash.

It is by all means a project. Nowhere near the “project” that @gdub0717 just sold on BaT. However, this car has $25K more headroom than Gordon’s, which hammered at $40K. I think that it is absolutely worth the $12.5K price.

The pics may not make a lot of sense if you aren’t used to poking at these. I saw lots over very clean primer on the interior. I didn’t run the VIN but the paint code on the Karman plate was indeed 86 (Schwarz). Seat leather is original. Agreed that the color combo is amazing. You wouldn’t think so, but factory Schwarz is rather rare (see next post). The combo with factory red very uncommon. I’ve never seen another anyway...

When Mark and I looked at this car the seller wasn't present so our assessment was limited by space a relatively poor lighting. My take was that as a Schwarz over Red car it has decent potential as a project. I'll second Mark's comments regarding condition, potential and rarity of colors. I did express reservations but only because the number that the seller had originally tossed out seemed a quite high. He has since lowered his asking price so at his point I can see it being a good option for someone who goes in with eyes wide open. At the risk of being Captain Obvious, with an E9 the condition of the body is everything. As Mark said, it appears relatively dry but you really won't know what you're dealing with until it is completely dis-assembled and stripped to bare metal.

Having been through the process I can tell you there is nothing quite as satisfying as rolling that freshly restored shell into your shop and beginning the process of assembling an essentially new E9.

Is Schwartz the original color?

Again, I didn’t run the VIN. The Karman tag says so, and we actively hunted for signs of a respray (to no avail). I didn’t see anything. The car is numbers matching and the VIN is listed above if anyone wants to run it. My photos were terrible due to the space and lighting issues mentioned above. The plan (or suggestion anyway) was to roll it outside and get better photos. Craig’s driveway isn’t very friendly for cars with no brakes though. :D

Agreed with @bimbill in full. Bill is an excellent PPI man, especially for paint. I’m only good at evaluating rusty projects, and overly otptimistic at that. I can’t tell the difference between a $15K paint job and a $25K paint job. None of that applies here though. :D I also lack experience paying for services. I literally have no idea what it costs to have work done, especially metal work.

There were certain indicators in this car that resonated with me. For instance, look at the primer on the A-pillar as seen from the inside. I don’t think I have seen much better.

@craigwahl,

I’ve done what I could to help out. You missed our appointment to review the car. Folks interested in this car have messaged me stating that they haven’t heard back from you. This car should sell itself if you make yourself available. Best wishes, GLWS!
