So I bought the 74 3.0 CS last summer and now I am getting ready to get her out for the season. If the snow ever stops in upstate NY. This car has a swapped out 5 speed in it at this time. Not the quietest gearbox and or clutch by any means. All though when she gets in 5th it quiets down a lot. Was looking for some feedback on the conversions and any recommendation on oil these 5 speeds like. Thanks

I hope I am not unnecessarily beating this drum, but whatever transmission lube you choose, it should probably bear a GL-4 rating and not GL-5. The former is kinder toward yellow metal synchronizers than the latter.

And, despite any obvious temptation, use distilled water and coolant, or premixed coolant in the radiator - rather than any mineral variety. :)

A postscript regarding the GL-4/GL-5 conundrum. Royal Purple has an offering that meets both ratings, but advertising specifically states that this product is free from the yellow metal corrosion concerns often associated with GL-5 lubricants.

Royal Purple Max Gear 75W-90 High Performance Synthetic Automotive Gear Oil
Max Gear is recommended for use in truck and automotive front or rear differentials, manual transmissions and lower gear units of marine engines that specify use of an API GL-5 or GL-4 fluid. It is non-corrosive to soft yellow metals (brass, bronze, copper, etc.) and synchronizer safe. Specially designed to extend gear and bearing life, Max Gear provides superior corrosion protection over competing conventional and synthetic gear oils.

We engineered this ultra-tough, high performance automotive hypoid gear oil to provide maximum protection to heavily loaded gears while maximizing power throughout the drive train. Max Gear outperforms ordinary gear oils by combining the highest quality synthetic oils with Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec additive technology.
