The M49 engine was designed for racing (in the CSL) and also used for testing on the M1 prototypes. The main difference is the cam drive . The chain goes to a intermediate gear which drives the camshafts with gears. It is a more complex setup. the engine came with drysump lubrication . There is the M49-2 which is slanted and the M49-3 as above which sits upright in the car. Both engines used the Kugelfischer slide injection.
