hi all
wondering if someone could help diagnose a problem with my gearbox.
its a 4 spd in a 75csi and about 6 mths ago working fine and car would engage 1st (and all other gears) from standstill very easily. however recently, when still (hot or cold) doesnt go into 1st gear very easily without having to push hard. If you slot into 2nd or 3rd first (from standstill) then slips into 1st straight after easily.
if driving and changing down, similar challenge of not going into first easily. however if coast to a complete stop with clutch engaged, then will slip into 1st no problem. however as soon as you release the clutch, gearbox into neutral and then re-engage clutch and try to engage 1st, similar problem as described above at standstill and hard to put into first.
thanks in advance!

Clutch isn't fully disengaging? This really sounds like the clutch is dragging slightly. Check the MC and slave cylinder for leaks. Also could be the disc sticking on the splines.
Probably not the gear box......

additionally, and complementary (check cluth system and so on)

considering that you mentioned that is more difficult to engage gears when cold, and as it is an easy issue, check the gearbox oil, if you positively know it had not been recently changed, just change and level it

you should use a good quality 80 mineral gearbox oil

you will need an 17sized allen head for both drain and refill, level in the refill hole

regards

Thanks for the comments. Ihad the transmission fluid flushed and refilled 2mths ago and made no difference. Will have the clutch inspected

Very likely a clutch hydraulic problem. Just replaced a leaking master cylinder that let oil soak the drivers carpet. After bleeding and adjusting the pedal travel the shifting is fine but while it was leaky it did exactly what your car does. Good luck

Gearbox update

Thanks everyone for the helpful pointers. Took the car in today and was diagnosed as clutch not fully disengaging. Was hoping just for the diagnosis and be off to drive it around for the day given it was first full day of sunshine in 3 months.
However, and with hindsight fortunately, the seal between engine/gearbox gave way and dumped oil on the shop's forecourt.....
Will do the 5 spd swap if they can source a box.
