I'll jump in as #7. I've always had a mad dream to stuff an N57 diesel in an E3 but I best save that lunacy for another time. Original engines deserve attention and kudos Dang for your efforts. HB Chris is right about engine bay paint, you're halfway there anyway.

While you are in there clean and scuff up the engine bay and paint it, you won’t a better opportunity than now and won’t regret it.
That's why I'm tearing into it. Can't get that close without cleaning it up. My plan is to be completely done with the engine compartment so when I move on to the rest of the car I don't have to think about it. Roadworthy... suspension.... wheels..... body and paint.

I like that idea, what would be the steps involved. Scuff, like what grit would you recommend, tape and shoot with what particular paint, can this be done in home shop or must it be in a booth or something seriously equipped for spraying. Curious.
Thanks! Mike

Mike,

I have done this with a small finish gun and with rattle cans. Scrub it clean, use 3M scuff pads or 200 grit where there are scrapes, shoot etching primer on bare metal or high build primer as well, a light sand if needed, degrease with SEM Solve or equivalent, tape everything, pull harnesses away from fenders etc. The shoot your paint.

theres a few sites like paintscratch.com that will mix up a rattle can with your car's color.

The automotive paint store where I get my paint will do the same and I've used them in the past. They work pretty good. Since I want to use a gun to paint, along with a touch-up gun, I've already gotten a quart of single-stage Chamonix.

I bought my eggnog, I mean Chamonix. I've hand painted all the hard to get areas, brackets, corners, box-shaped areas, and should be painting tonight if I get the masking done. More photos to come...

The paint has a bunch of air bubbles because I just shook the can. Hand painting so it doesn't matter.

Didn't get all the masking done but got close. Should be painting tomorrow and feeling like I've turned the corner and heading back "up" from this point on. Hopefully I didn't just jinx it!

I had to deal with a near catastrophe yesterday when my refrigerator stopped working and my beer got warm, AND my frozen corn dogs thawed. But, cool heads prevailed (pun intended) and I swapped the frig and all my mancave survival food and managed to get a little done on the car too..

Cooling system done except for the reservoir, fuel system done except for the fuel tank repairs, clutch hydraulics done, rear brakes replaced with good used calipers and the front calipers are going on this weekend and hopefully the ignition system. Getting close. Getting it running again will be at the same time it's drivable.

Will you be able to get the air cleaner assembly on with that fuel hose routing? Looks great.
