Anyone know what US import rules are for modified cars? Ordinarily cars over 25 y. o. import without difficulty. (Just curious)

Why not build for 85k?

Seems possible for less...

1) 25k donor coupe
2) 15k 6 series driveline + overhaul
3) 20k race parts + suspension
4) 20k paint

It can be done but I think your numbers are low. I believe that by "6 series" you are referring to an S38 and driveline. It costs around $10K to rebuild an S38 and the G280 transmission pretty much can't be rebuilt. That means having another G280 or G265 on hand. $2K and o rebuild a G265 which is also suffering from parts availability.

A $25k. pipe generally has some rust issues to tackle. i don't think that your race prep bumve factors in labor and materials for a race sanctioned cage, stitch welding the body, etc. Then you have a racing suspension, custom width racing wheels, slicks.

The paint and bodywork figure needs to include buying and doing the glass work on an i'll fitting flare kit.

Don't think this is the M engine. But one of the euro 3.5 L versions (M90 or B34). So costs more feasible. But I bet you won't get it done for that money unless can put in considerable sweat equity.:)

Agreed. I am comparing apples to oranges. I was just going off of the 6 series reference. You can definitely work with an M90 drivetrain or B35 for $15K, megasquirt, etc.

This does seem like a show car not a race car. With a race version that pays homage to the BMW motorsport program, you would also need to factor in a custom fuel cell and filler.

WE ALL WATCHED THIS BUILD

This is not bdigel's club racer build that we've all been following

I have the opportunity to build a Group 4 flared coupe with a S38 & 280 gear box, estimate is north of $125K and that's with a free carcass. A different drive train would be a little less expensive but most of the labor is in the bodywork.

I agree with you both...with lots of hard work you can probably save something + get a custom outcome.

But all respect to those working on, buying & selling these classics....with todays pricing above 100k sounds very feasible.

Wonder if you could find a way to build the group 4 (certainly would be nice to have another member here involved in such a build).

It would need to be a multi-year project so my finances could handle it, unless I win the lottery for more than $10.oo. Promised my wife and finance guy no more cars 2 cars ago.

that is not my car , similar but not mine ! Not to be rude either < my build is orders of magnitude more complex , My car has an s 38 converted to euro coil over plug , with milspec race style harness, stand alone ecu, custom carbon airbox, the engine and fire wall are moved 8 inches further back in the car , converted to a steering rack , total custom tubular front suspension, no rubber suspension in the car, call sperical bearings , custom speedway sway bar , e28 rear suspension , Custom 4 clutch mod. ramps 410 LSD, everything is solid mounted, Custom High end 2 way adj MCS dampners , Etc. etc. etc

I doubt that car actually has 20 K in actual race parts , its nice but its just got some bolt on with an old L jet M90 engine

i don't think Brendan will sell it anytime soon, and even if he did ... i don't foresee an affordable number in your future. i have it on good authority that he would be happy to build one for you ... he likes special + comprehensive projects.

Mark, i like the fast + the furious reference below.

Grosser tribute could be a lotta bang for the buck. Suggest putting some nuts on the drive shaft bolts.
Like the custom AL tank.

Someone go poke it with a stick ;)

No Inconvenience at all ! and some great comments following !
To Quote my friend Bobby Thrash @ Strictly German ( who I got what was left of the car to begin with ) once said " Everything is for sale except the dog "
in My case ,for the right price, everything is for sale except, My Wife and the cats . haha
That being said I do plan on selling my current project , the S54 e9 I am building , When I finish it I need to get some cash Flow so I can build some other projects and do my own thing
