although I can work on my car without one, is there a source for shop guides or manuals?
It would be awesome if there were some online PDFs.

W&N has the Blue Books that can be downloaded for free. They are in German, but fairly easy to translate the operation you are working on with Google Translate.

Go to the bottom of the page, under service click repair manual

@Keshav what is the difference between the blue books and the orange books?

Im really not sure but it seems the orange books cover 2500 thru 3.3Li up to /78 (which the blue books need the updates for, perhaps).
Certainly more compact. Many here look up parts# frequently who could possibly shed light to the differences.
