Bert,

The long one I have is exactly the same, 18mm and 143mm, part number is 41 51 1 881 589 which lists as 320i. It should work.

Chris,
Slight diversion to the thread, but would any of the MB door brakes work on the E3?

Thanks

Hmm...interesting Chris! Maybe the curved arm has a drastic effect on how far the door opens. So the top brake on the pic you had posted is for the 320i?

Chamonix_E9, would you mind posting a pic of the E9? in question brake you'd bought? Just want to see how all these door brakes compare. Thanks!

Bert, yes, but the bend is pretty minor. Bought it on eBay and advertised as for a 73 but the end had been ground to the 18mm thickness.

Drew, don't know about the e3, the MB door stops (search using that term) are pretty cheap on eBay and worth a try.

Sure no problem, here is a picture. By the way, the BMW parts department is still saying I/we am/are wrong, while the dealer did the courtesy of ordering a second set which turned out to be identical again (so still wrong). As a result, BMW parts department are now going to investigate it using my chassisnumber (even though as far as my knowledge goes, this part was completely unchanged for the whole modelrange from 1968 till 1975...). Will keep you updated.

And here is the pic with part no.
Compare the difference with Bert's picture.

Bert, in the next week or so I will pull the door panel and see if the MB brakes I have fit. Just tried them in the 2002 and I think they are too long, can only go to the first stop, they may fit the coupe just fine. I agree the BMW one I have is probably too long, bought it on eBay and seller claimed it was e9 but it may not be the case. The shorter BMW one is also a little short for the 2002 but works fine. I think someone already shaved the mounting surfaces at the pin location, same with the longer one.

Chris

(mine is also 65mm to first stop)
Chris,

Did you try the MB brake on the E9?

No, but I'm convinced it will work, the MB brake that is. Right length, width at A pillar bracket, right mounting holes. I need to take off door panel to replace motor but I've been putting it off.

Luis,
I did buy the MB door brake. Paid $26 with shipping from Europort Parts. Did not install yet (had another original from a door I picked up along with the new glass).

That said, the one I purchased looks like a perfect fit for the E3 front door and I believe all that will be required is the plastic shaft shim. Similar assessment to what Chris said. I can't recall but I think the length is shorter than those for the E9.

This was the part number: 1 Door Stop MEYLE 930 33024 500

This thread has been helpful, but there is a lot of "it should fit", and "I've bought it, but haven't fitted it yet".

So, I have done some research on my own, and happened to have doors from a Mercedes W123 wagon in the barn (1984 230TE).
The stoppers from that car fits the coupe like a glove, with only minor modifications.
The arm is 80mm long, and the coupe original is 85mm.
Can't imagine the door opening more than it does now.
They're perfect, and look stock too.

I ordered a set of new ones for $37 on eBay, and the part numbers are:

Mercedes: 123 720 05 16
Meyle: 014 072 0034

I had some plastic vacuum tubing that fit the new stoppers, and made new bushings by fitting it and drilling a 5mm hole to open it up.
Since I don't have the pins, I used M5 allen bolts and lock nuts.

I had to grind away some metal on the stoppers to get the correct angle on the arm, but other than that it was a great replacement. No grinding to the arm itself.

See attached pics.

door brake

Just did this last month. From input in the Forum here, I ordered the MB unit, from Autohauz AZ, Meyle, p/n 126720016, $18.30. Fits perfectly in my driver door.
(Sven, I know you wanted to know when I would get to this, signage at judging to beware the uber-opening door was getting tedious) Mike

Too long but can be made to work

I got the newer BMW (E28 I think) brake from Jim at Mesa Performance (he knows the part number). It was not expensive. It is a bolt in replacement and comes with the nylon bushing and new pin. My original pin was bent and it seemed easier to buy the BMW part than trying to straighten the pin and source a bushing for the MB part. The only issue is that the arm is too long. A quick cut, weld, and cold galvanizing primer fixes that in a few minutes. I found it to be an easy swap.

Jeff,

I know someone who makes 02 brakes, if I give him your old one he will make them for e9s, just needs the precise length.

Very old thread but...help needed,please...
I am trying to figure out if the e12 door brake works on the E9

Top brake
is 41511881589 realoem lists as E21 - pin to mounting face 63m, guide pin length 20mm no sleeve

Middle brake
is 41521814692 realoem says e12 rear - pin to mounting face 63mm, guide pin 18mm sleeved

Bottom brake
is 41511879483 realoem E12 E28 front - pin to mount face is 84mm, guide pin 20m no sleeve
image.jpg

The middle brake looks exactly like the one Alan bought from Rob.

I installed a pair of the MB door brakes over a year ago. They fit and work perfectly for me. much more robust design than the original e9 brakes.

Following Gary's lead, I too installed a set of MB door brakes. As noted, you need to toss the plastic sleeves that come with them, and make up some sort of a sleeve for the door pin, but other than that it was easy.

Thank you Alan.

My confusion lies in that people say they use the
e21 brake which is 115mm to the second stop.
Stock E9 is 80mm at second stop(according to chamonix Post below)

So just wondering how the E21 brake works at 35mm longer than stock?

Seems the e12 part should work too?
Anyone?
