Getting to the end of my project, and thought the other forumites might be interested in the custom exhaust just finished earlier today. Certainly not for everyone - especially if you're going for original condition.

That looks fantastic! Please detail the job for us. Specifically, what mods you did to the gas tank to make it all fit.

Wow!

That is a sweet set up. I has a Remus on a 318i and it made that engine sound tough.
I can only imagine...
Rough cost?

Pics of the trunk pre- and post-paint attached. When I was doing the bodywork, it was pretty clear that the spare tire well was in bad shape (dented up, in addition to some rust), and the fuel tank needed to be replaced. So after doing some research we decided to just tub out the trunk, which allowed not only this exhaust but also a more modern and safe fuel system and structural reinforcement to reduce chassis flex.

Cost of the exhaust system itself was pretty low actually (~$1500 for parts and labor).

Exhaust

That is too cool for school. Perfect in my mind. I have always hated the look of the single
tip, (my apologies to the purists) and I put a dual tip on my car strictly as an experiment.
I would be embarrassed to post a pic on account of the fact that the tip I used was a cheesy
$19.95 piece from a local box store! Yet I like the look v.s. the single tip. What you have done is very "artful" My exhaust system at this point is hacked together. I would love some tips from members as to how to renew my system in the best possible way without breaking the bank...from the head rearward. $3200 for a stainless system from my friends at "CoupeKing" is too much for the budget to bear.
P.S. Those look like motorcycle mufflers...yes?

They are. I wanted something that would tuck up under the body a fit in the space under the trunk. This seemed like the best option. Once I have the car on the street for a bit it may be necessary to stick some kind of resonator in the middle of one of the longer pipes under the car but I am trying to avoid that.

I had to reduce the quality of this under-car pic to get it to fit, but here's one more.

i've always thought dual exhaust would look bada$$ on a coupe....and it does!

Without taking anything away from rb1971's tasteful project, here is another previously posted specimen for your consideration.

Nice. Love the color combo too. Do you have any pics from below? A few folks have asked if it's possible to run dual exhaust without tubbing out the trunk, and while I think it might be I'd be concerned about clearances on the passenger side.

I am unaware of any ground-up shots.

Photos of this car have been floating around for several years.
http://www.pbase.com/quad/csi The video which has been posted on this forum before indicates a 2001 date. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35RuuWDOmd8 Given the substantial under-hood modifications, one would expect the entire undercarriage was similarly modified.

For what its worth, I have seen a few other custom examples of dual exhausts. Never took pictures. I vaguely recall seeing a late-70's ad for a bolt-on E9 dual exhaust, but never had any first hand experience with it other than seeing one in a parking garage and hearing the driver grouse about the "truck-like" warble. The driver alluded to the fact that he bought the exhaust from a mail order business. Another example appeared to have borrowed heavily from the restrictive exhaust commonly found on certain Firebirds and Camaros. I suspect that the the single-to-dual setup was not stock GM.
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/b...-3.8L-V6-Pacesetter-TFX-Kat-Back-Exhaust.HTML Another version had bundled two separate "chromed" straight-through mufflers/resonators strikingly reminiscent of the early model Jag E Types, yet the exhaust may have been borrowed from or inspired by another B. Leyland offering. The guy who produced that version had a Mini with an exhaust adapted from a H.D. Sportster. His XK120 had a fishtailed exhaust reminiscent of a Supermarine Spit. Why? Because he could, and because he probably didn't know about Supertrapp.

As you have aptly demonstrated, with a little imagination, there are many other variations on the same theme, including the use of a straight through muffler from a Mercedes TD. And then . . . there's always the exhaust of which only few dare to dream  (see bottom pic.).

Thanks for the info (and pics). There are definitely a number of options. We considered a Lake pipe type set up, like on the Stuck #11 car. This was back before I did any body work and considered doing more aggressive racing fenders, roof hoop (which I still might do), etc. Ultimately I decided I liked the original lines of the coupe enough not to mess around with the flares, and decided against the Lake pipes due to problems with using lifts.

Exhaust

If I recall, the Scandinavian machine had a rear mounted turbo in the mix. Charge air piped back forward through an intercooler...wild!
