renewal of the existing parts

by the way, there is no really need of buying new parts, you can renew the old ones using appropriate kits from walloth&nesch:

master cylinder:

Most famous E9 thumb?

Great to see your thumb again in a well documented "how to to it" picture serie :)

I've done the master cylinder as described a few years back. Next to come is the slave cylinder. A lot of thank you for the source of rebuild kit to the slave.

Keep up your by all of us appreciated photo documentation.

Cheers!

On Penske and Maximillian the 880 part number repair kit is listed for the other style "inside" slave cylinder - this kit also fits the old style "outside" cylinder too? I have same setup as you.

of course: (the last figure is the price in EUR)

the rebuild kit parts are:

A 21 52 1 102 625 repair kit master cylinder 19,50
A 21 52 1 113 880 Repair kit for slave cylinder
15,00

well, yes, i have used this 880 kit in the old style slave cylinder, and the result was good, the only drawback, is that i do not know how to install the flexible cover that comes with the kit (the one that should go in the push rod), fortunately my old flexible cover was quite usable, so i didn´t replace it

ha, ha, ...the thumb always gives you the scale of the working place (easier than the odd mm to inches conversion), and also somehow a social-humanistic approach of this kind of mechanical work, it tells you the story of the hard, and dirty job that is needed to reach the target of a well maintained coupe
thanks for your comment

by the way, it is really hard to clean my nails after this kind of work, so i ended up telling the story to the people when I attend those endless boring serious dressing code meetings, then I become the king of the coffe-breaks ;-)

Great write-up and photos! Some comments to assist others giving it a go. The condition of the bores in both the master and slave cylinder should be inspected closely. Typically very minor pitting can be removed with a hone attached to a power drill. Anything deep enough to catch with your finger nail will require a specialist to re-sleeve. This is common and shouldn't cost too much. Stainless steel sleeves will resist further pitting from the moisture in old fluid.

There is also a two piece nylon bush that goes in the pedal pivot bolt hole. Costs only a few cents and should be replaced as a matter of course.

Repair kits are available from ATE directly or BMW dealers. Prices vary so W&N can be a good bet.

bet.

+1, thanks for remembering this,

yeah, the nylon bushes are unexpensive, available at your favourite bmw dealer, and really necessary to complete a good renewal of this key system

together with a new self locking nut, and the correct torque setting, 25 to 30 N.m

do not forget to pour a little long term grease in the points specified in the blue manuals too

regards

adding some info on the rigid hose that goes from the brake fluid reservoir to the master cyl

difficult to assembly, lubricate a bit with brake fluid to insert the hose into the master cyl
