placing
virtually all hoses, the gas cap, checking the tank, one of the few
things left is the white plastic evaporator tank.
The symptom is gas smell in my garage (and trunk) with the
gas tank mostly full on warm days.

the sender/pickup is sealed via an o-ring that can leak fumes and
also fuel when the tank is full. Recommend changing the o-ring before
venturing into the expansion tank. Cheap and easy.

Check the metal tab slots and bend down to be sure O Ring is compressed.
Even with a new O Ring, the position of the tabs can prevent propper
seating of the ring.
As to the evaporation tank, I have heard that the lines runing
to it are most likely.

My gas smell was cured when I replaced the one inch plastic insert
that is inside the end of the fuel line where the fuel line connects
to the sender. The insert was cracked and it caused a slight leak
only after I turned the engine off. I didn't catch it at first because
the gas evaporated so quickly. Anyhow it caused a horrible smell.

Make sure your petrol tank breather is clear and that it exits outside
the car.
Symptom occurred in my 2002Tii and the breather /overflow pipe from
the tank was in the boot instead of going through the floor
